A WEEKEND IN REVIEW! (from 24 to Shooting!)

Well the weekend appeared and disappeared much faster than is pleasant, but I had a great chance to relax and take sometime to enjoy the finer reruns and old DVD’s that I have.

Managed to catch “24 Redemption” which is doing the rounds in the UK. Very popular on DVD, as a stand alone film that sits between series 6 and 7 of the much loved and well paced 24. Mr Sutherland does his best action role, and is certainly in shape for an apparently action hungry series, that has just started on Sky. (Doing its best to overcome the slightly off pace series 6.)
Robert Carlisle joins him as a(nother) ex special forces guy who is paying his penance in a made up African country.

I love these shows, something about the production value hit’s the mark and is more exciting than certain cinema and Straight to DVD’s that I have seen in the last six months.

24 : Redepmption (there is some spanish as well for you crazy kids)

The tenuous Sutherland family link stretches to the next film released a few moons a go starring rent a muscle “Mathew McConaughy” and affable chic Goldie Hawn…..erm sorry I mean Kate Hudson. The film is pretty with pretty stars and sets the heroes on an amusing quest for hidden treasure around a private island owned by a phycotic rapper. The film is titled “Fools Gold” and perhaps refers to the money that is given to anyone who is selling this DVD.

Papa Sutherland (Donald) plays second fiddle as a rich (I think?) Englishman with teen daughter trouble. Ray Winstone dons the second most unconvincing accent in the world (first lies in ITV’s Demons - but least said the better) as a deep south treasure hunter and Mathew McConaughy’s nemesis and former boss.

Fools Gold (missing treasure/plot)

The final flick in the collection I saw, was the amusing and seriously violent “Shoot Em Up” with Clive Owen as a nameless one who attempts to save a newborn baby from unnamed chasers. The film’s plot is insane of course, but leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth, You can imagine the director going to a Hollywood pitch meeting and saying I want to make a video game into a movie, and include some of the most bizarre but well made action set pieces in the last five years….

Very cool movie, and every bone of the serious film appreciating part of my brain (does a brain have bones?) wanted to hate the film. But it has Monica Belucci, Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti. The rest isn’t too important, and who would have thoughts carrots can be so violent? (watch and see if you have the urge)

Here’s the trailer and see you soon peoples!

  1. After Children Of Men and Shoot 'Em Up I can't deny my love for Clive Owen. He's just making great films. Shoot 'Em Up was like a porno for action junkies..it ruled.

  2. Shoot 'Em Up reminds me of Rockinrolla. They may be nothing alike because I've seen neither, they just seem loosely similar. Anyway, that Rockinrolla any good?
